League Two Preview: March 14

Another weekend of football in League Two is fast approaching, with one game taking place on Friday night, followed by the remaining eleven on Saturday. Here is your League Two Preview: March 14 edition.

Friday 13th March

Newport County vs. Cheltenham Town

Friday the 13th is considered unlucky for some, and both Newport and Cheltenham find themselves desperately in search for some luck in the league. Newport County have won just two of their previous ten games and are without a win at Rodney Parade in four attempts; form that has seen the Exiles slip out of the play-offs. As for Cheltenham, the Robins find themselves perilously close to the drop and are just one point clear as they look to avoid a third game without victory. Defeat would also be their sixth game on the road without a win.

Saturday 14th March

Burton Albion vs. Accrington Stanley

The Brewers go into this game top of League Two by two points and will look to extend that further when they take on Accrington Stanley at the Pirelli Stadium. When the sides met in February, it was Stanley who took the spoils in a 1-0 victory with Josh Windass on the score sheet – Accrington’s only goalscorer since that game. Since that fixture, Stanley are without a win in three games in the league.

Wycombe Wanderers vs. Shrewsbury Town

Third place host second place this weekend, with just a point separating the sides. Wycombe are hot on the Shrews heals and are unbeaten in four games, but have failed to win at home in their last four encounters at Adams Park. As for the Shrews, they let slip top spot following last week’s draw with Cambridge and suffered back to back defeats at the back end of February. Both sides will be looking to consolidate a top three position, with this a tough game for both.

Dagenham and Redbridge vs. Southend United

Southend occupy the first play-off place following last week’s draw at home to Wycombe. They travel to a Dagenham side that have won their last two games to propel them further afield from the drop. The Shrimps, with promotion on the horizon, are unbeaten in three, but also haven’t won on the road in three attempts.

Portsmouth vs. Luton Town

Luton have hit a real dip in form of late, losing their last two league games and losing three away games in succession. They travel to Portsmouth who, despite a resurging change of form throughout February, have failed to win in their last three league games. Despite this, they are unbeaten in their last four games at Fratton Park, but will face a Hatters side that will be looking to push their season back on track.

Mansfield Town vs. Bury

Despite last week’s defeat at home to Oxford, ending a four game winning streak, Bury look to extend their unbeaten run on the road to four as they travel to Mansfield. The Stags, however, have hit a bit of form of late and are unbeaten in their last five games at Field Mill. Both sides will be looking for all three points for different reasons, with Bury looking to continue their play-off ambitions, whilst Mansfield look to avoid the drop.

Oxford United vs. Plymouth Argyle

Following Oxford’s impressive victory on the road against Bury last time out, they seek to extend their recent unbeaten home record to five as they host Plymouth. Following Plymouth’s credible win against Northampton on Saturday, John Sheridan’s men leapt back into the play-offs, and will look to stay there when they visit the Kassam Stadium.

Cambridge United vs. Stevenage Borough

Stevenage are the in-form side in League Two at the moment, and are unbeaten in six games. They sit one place away from the play-offs, but are level on points with Plymouth just above them. They travel to Cambridge to face a U’s side that, despite a last minute equaliser away to Shrewsbury, have failed to win at home in their last five attempts. Also for Cambridge, they’ve won just once in ten games, losing six. Not a good time it would seem to face the Boro.

Northampton Town vs. Tranmere Rovers

Despite losing on the road to Plymouth last weekend, Northampton still hope to achieve the play-offs, and prepare to host Tranmere this weekend. Cobblers have won their last five games at Sixfields and will look to extend that. As for Tranmere, they slipped into the relegation zone as a result of their fourth successive defeat last week, worrying times for Rovers fans.

Exeter City vs. A.F.C Wimbledon

Exeter recorded their first win in eight last week but are without a win at St. James Park in five, and host a Wimbledon side who have struggled recently on the road. The Dons are without a win in six away visits, but are unbeaten in five at home. Both sides have an outside chance of reaching the play-offs, but will need to put a string of successful performances together.

Morecambe vs. Hartlepool United

Like Wimbledon and Exeter, Morecambe too have an outside chance of reaching the play-offs but must turn around their form at home. Having lost their last two games at the Globe Arena, it’s their away form that has kept them in contention. Hartlepool are the visitors, but their fans will have little to look forward to it would seem, as they’re without a win on the road in eleven attempts, losing their last three, and are eight points from safety.

York City vs. Carlisle United

The final game comes from Bootham Crescent where 20th-placed York host 21st placed Carlisle. Both sides sit on 36 points and are just two from safety, so a win could be crucial come the end of the season. Neither side have really hit a run of form, but Carlisle have lost their last two away games.
