FANTASY PROFILE: CARLOS SANTANA, 3B, CLEVELAND INDIANS
LWOS Ranking 13, Captains’ Value: $9.91
There is a lot to like about the versatile Carlos Santana. First, lets start with the power. In 2,761 PA, Santana has a career .193 ISO that, along with a career 14% HR/FB ratio, has helped him average over 20 HR the last 4 seasons. Second, Santana displays excellent plate discipline. His career 15.6 BB% is elite and his walk rate consistently ranks in the top ten in MLB every year. In fact, between 2011-2014 Santana ranks third with a 15.3 BB%; right behind Joey Votto and Jose Bautista.
Another thing to like about Santana is his durability. Since his knee surgery in 2010 that cost him 56 games, Santana has been sturdy force in the line-up missing only 25 games from 2011-2014 due to various minor injuries. He does have two concussions under his belt, but he won’t be spending anytime behind the plate this year. Santana will also have 1B eligibility along with 3B, giving him value in positional flexibility.
If there is anything to complain about with Santana, it’s the 50-point difference in his offensive splits (he is a switch hitter). He has hit a career .282 against LH (in 760 AB) and a career .232 against RH (in 1531 AB). But with the plus power, plate discipline, and positional flexibility Santana provides, he should be a solid mid-round draft pick.
