FANTASY PROFILE: ALEX RODRIGUEZ, 3B, NEW YORK YANKEES
LWOS Ranking 25, Captains’ Value: -$2.46
Alex Rodriguez, one of the most prominent yet controversial names in the game today, will return back to the MLB after a yearlong suspension for violating the leagues performance enhancing drug (PED) policy and his involvement in Biogenesis. In the past, he was considered one of the greatest player in the game at that time. Now, going on 40 years old and almost 18 months away from baseball, there’s not much fantasy value left in A-Rod.
Rodriguez hasn’t played a full season since 2007 and let’s face it, he’s highly unlikely to play a full season this year, designating him to a bench role only on fantasy teams. Injuries, especially his left hip, have really slowed him down. His power has been quietly diminishing since 2008 and we really don’t know what it’s going to look like today. Spring Training is under way so I went over to MLB.com to look at the stats and what do you know, A-Rod is 4-9 with a double and a RBI. I actually saw his first hit and, to be honest, he looked a bit winded after running to 1B. Of course, we don’t look too hard into Spring Training numbers as most of the pitchers he will see are either destined for AAA or fighting for a 5th rotation spot.
A-Rod won’t have any problems seeing and hitting the ball, it’s how often and how far it will go that will determine his value that, as far as I’m concerned, is strictly deep AL only league material until proven otherwise.
