After having the best season of his career, journeyman Brian Hoyer embarks for greener shores. The former patriot went undrafted in 2009 and backed up Tom Brady for three seasons before being cut in 2012. Hoyer has served time on both the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers rosters along with two seasons as a Brown.
During his tenure at the Browns Hoyer stepped in for injured starter Brandon Weedon in 2013 and started 3 tames until sustaining an ALC tear against the Buffalo Bills in week 5. Coming into 2014 it was expected that Johnny ‘Football’ Manziel would beat out Hoyer during camp but due to a poor performance Hoyer was named as starting quarterback for the 2014 season.
Hoyer threw for 3,326 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions during 14 games for the browns in 2014. Initially leading the Browns to one of their best starts in two decades, 6-3 Hoyer also posted a team and league record for biggest road comeback in franchise history, posting 26 unanswered points against the Tennessee Titans in week 5. Hoyer would later lose his starting position to Manziel after going into a four game slump seeing the Browns slip to 7-6. This demotion was short lived and he would return for the week 16 game against the Carolina Panthers after Manziel was injured. Hoyer was unable to finish the season after sustaining a shoulder injury during the same game and the Browns had to call on fellow undrafted Quarterback Connor Shaw for the final game of the year.
While Hoyer is not the best Quarterback in the league, the dearth of talent at the position during this year’s free agency has seen teams scramble for the 29-year-old’s talents.
