Fantasy Profile: Ryan Zimmerman, 3B, Washington Nationals

Ryan Zimmerman has battled injuries in recent years, but a move to first base bodes well for his future health. He's a nice bounce back candidate for 2015.

FANTASY PROFILE: RYAN ZIMMERMAN, 3B, WASHINGTON NATIONALS

LWOS RANKING 14, CAPTAIN’S VALUE: $13.94

The emergence of Anthony Rendon, the departure of Adam LaRoche, and Ryan Zimmerman’s lingering shoulder issues have prompted the Washington Nationals to permanently move Zimmerman from the hot corner over to first base. Moving to a less physically-taxing position should be a huge plus for Zimmerman, as his biggest issue in recent years has been staying on the field.

He played at least 145 games in 2012 and 2013, but was limited to just 61 games last year and 101 in 2011. When he’s on the field though, it’s hard to argue with his production. In his 240 PAs in 2014, he still produced a .280/.342/.449 slash line with 5 homers, 38 RBI, and 26 runs, while posting an above-average 9.2% walk rate and striking out at the lowest rate of his career. His power took a hit, but as Fangraphs’ Mike Podhorzer suggests, that could be the result of a thumb injury (now healed) and perhaps a little bad luck.

As a guy who will eventually have eligibility at 1B, 3B, and OF who could hit about 25 homers with a good average, as well as put up good run and RBI totals thanks to a loaded lineup, Ryan Zimmerman is currently going for pretty cheap in most drafts. He’s usually seems to be pretty overvalued in terms of fantasy, but this year it appears folks are jumping off the bandwagon because the injuries are starting to pile up for someone that just hit the dreaded age 30 mark. If you believe the move to first base will help him stay healthy, take him between picks 110 and 140 and enjoy the bounce back.
