FANTASY PROFILE: MATT CARPENTER, 3B, ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

LWOS Ranking 10, Captain’s Value: $12.30

The two things that give Matt Carpenter fantasy value are his ability to hit for a strong AVG and his ability to score runs. Last year, his AVG was a respectable .272 which was actually a step back from his totals in 2012 & 2013. Last year, his BABIP of .318 was well below his BABIP from the previous two seasons. This indicates that an AVG in the .290-.300 is within reason.

While his ability to draw walks (11.5% BB Rate) does not directly impact his fantasy value, the bottom line is that this gets him on base on a regular basis which has given Carpenter opportunities to score runs on a regular basis. He has scored 225 runs over the last two seasons.

Even though Carpenter is strong in these two areas, there are some trade-offs to consider. The first is that he is not going to provide strong power totals as his career high in HR is 11. The other downside is that he is not going to steal many bases. Despite these weaknesses, his ability to provide strong batting average and the ability to score runs makes him someone worth targeting on draft day.
