League Two Preview: 7th March

The Sky Bet League Two weekend boasts a full set of fixtures.

Shrewsbury Town vs Cambridge United

League Two leaders Shrewsbury welcome Cambridge to the New Meadow this Saturday. Salop took back the top spot in the league following their victory away to Accrington on Tuesday night, whilst Cambridge suffered a heavy home defeat at the hands of York City. Salop will be looking to put last week’s defeat, their first loss on home soil, behind them, and look to consolidate top spot.

Hartlepool United vs Burton Albion

Burton slipped to second on Tuesday following the Shrews’ victory and the Brewers not playing, but travel to bottom club Hartlepool this weekend in search of regaining top spot. Hartlepool have won three of their previous home games, but host a Brewers side who will be spurred on by dropping a place in the league. Hartlepool remain seven points from safety, with Burton six points clear of the play-off chasers.

Southend United vs Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe make up the top three and they travel to play-off hopefuls Southend. The Shrimpers have slipped to sixth following a goalless draw at Wimbledon on Tuesday, but are level on points with Luton, fourth, and fifth placed Bury. It will be a close game, with Southend strong at home, but Wycombe impressive on the road.

Luton Town vs Morecambe

Luton stay fourth despite an away defeat on Tuesday against play-off rivals Bury. The two sides, with Southend, are all level on points, with the Hatters hosting Morecambe on Saturday. Morecambe are off the back of a 1-1 draw at Oxford, but will be boosted by top scorer Kevin Ellison ending his goal drought. Luton are unbeaten in six at Kenilworth Road, winning three in that run.

Bury vs Oxford United

Oxford United have a tough away game when they visit Bury this weekend. The Shakers have recorded four successive victories and have moved to fifth as a result. They are also unbeaten in their previous six home games, winning four of those at Gigg Lane. Oxford currently sit 19th, five points from safety.

Stevenage Borough vs Newport County

Making up the playoff places are Newport County who travel to a Stevenage side who haven’t lost in five. Both sides hit a dip in form through January and early February, but Stevenage seem to have regained momentum, whilst the Exiles are very inconsistent of late. A positive for Newport are that they have been more successful on the road recently, but with the Boro just one point behind prior to kick-off, it could be a close encounter at Broadhall Way.

Plymouth Argyle vs Northampton Town

Two sides meet at Home Park where a Plymouth side who have slipped out of the play-off places host a Northampton side hoping to slide into them. Plymouth looked comfortable throughout February with four successive wins, but back to back defeats has seen them slip to eighth. Cobblers meanwhile have recorded three successive wins, and have lost only once in their last six games. A win could see either side move into play-off contention, and only three points separate seventh-placed Newport and tenth-placed Northampton.

A.F.C Wimbledon vs York City

Wimbledon currently sit seven points from the play-offs, but they could make up the ground with a strong end to the season. York also need a run of results, as the Minstermen sit just two points from safety despite Tuesday night’s impressive 3-0 victory on the road at Cambridge.

Accrington Stanley vs Portsmouth

Both of these sides have had a decent February, but back-to-back defeats has put a dent in Stanley’s run. As for Pompey, they were unbeaten in eight before Tuesday night’s last minute defeat at the hands of Northampton. Pompey remain thirteenth, with Accrington not far behind in fifteenth.

Carlisle United vs Exeter City

Exeter didn’t play on Tuesday but are nine points off the play-offs as a result of a seven game winless run. They travel to a Carlisle side who recorded their first win on Tuesday following four successive defeats. As a result, the Cumbrians moved out of the drop zone, but remain two points from safety.

Cheltenham Town vs Mansfield Town

Last Saturday, these two sides both recorded a vital victory as they look to avoid relegation, but on Tuesday, Cheltenham hit a setback whilst Mansfield marched on. Cheltenham slipped back into the relegation zone following defeat against relegation rivals Carlisle, but the Stags managed an impressive 1-0 away win over play-off hopefuls Newport County. Nevertheless, this is an important fixture for both sides; defeat for either could end up proving costly.

Tranmere Rovers vs Dagenham and Redbridge

Another meeting of two sides at the wrong end of the table takes place at Prenton Park where Tranmere host Dagenham. Rovers have suffered three straight defeats and sit only one point from safety, whilst the Daggers have won two and lost two of their last four games, and sit six points from the dreaded drop.
