Athleticism: C

A fairly average athlete, whose combine numbers don’t match up to his athletic ability on tape. Has get-off from the line of scrimmage, but is more to do with his timing and length than athletic ability. Hip fluidity leaves something to be desired and doesn’t have good lateral pursuit. Able to accelerate in a straight line when he has a clear path, but nothing spectacular. Did not drop into coverage during film viewed.

Pass Rush: C+

Ability as a pass rusher is more related to his ability to create pressure than it is to sack the quarterback. Possesses a long first step and generally good timing to get on top of opposing tackles. Has some dip and flex running the arc and uses good angles to get to the passer. Effective bull rush to collapse his opponent into his own quarterback. Can disrupt a quarterback’s timing and take swipes at the ball, but typically only produces effort sacks.

Run Defense: A

Arguably the best edge player versus the run in this year’s draft class. Powerful and disruptive versus the run and is able to move blockers into the backfield. Has the power to anchor, stack, and shed at the line. Shows some burst to slip gaps inside. Sets a hard edge and sheds quickly. Good eyes to read the run. Takes on block with pop and ragdolls tight ends.

Technique: A-

Overall is a technically sound player who is reliable in what he does on a snap-to-snap basis. Shows powerful and active hands to get inside of his blockers frame and disengage. Plays with plus pad level and leverage. Is a very reliable tackler. Has long arms and huge hands to grab and wrap up ballcarriers. A heavy, forceful tackler who rarely lets his man get away.

Intangibles: A-

Possesses very good personal and football character, especially on the field. Hard-working player who gives his best against the run and the pass. Competitive and will do the dirty work as he did in UCLA’s 3-4 defense. Possesses good timing at the snap, though he can be overly anxious. Reads the direction of the ballcarrier well with very good instincts versus the run. Assignment sound and almost always in position.

Red Flags: Durability

Bottom Line: Owamagbe Odighizuwa doesn’t wow with splash plays or remarkable athletic prowess on the field, but his overall level of consistency and production versus the run is enough to earn him a job in an NFL starting lineup some time down the road, if not sooner. While he will never be a double digit sack producer, he brings consistent effort and pressure as a pass rusher. Could have some scheme versatility if he is indeed athletic enough to drop into coverage.

Comparison: Sam Montgomery

Grade: 8.7 (2nd Round)
