When the Toronto Maple Leafs picked up defenseman Tim Erixon off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks, it was only a matter of time before one of the current Leafs defenseman was on his way out. That time was today, and the Leafs traded German-born blue-liner Korbinian Holzer to the Anaheim Ducks, in exchange for Eric Brewer and a fifth round pick.
Drafted in the 4th round, 111th overall, in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, Holzer spent most of his career between the Leafs and their AHL affiliate, Toronto Marlies. In the 2012-13 season, Holzer appeared in 22 games, scoring 2 goals and adding 1 assist, but also posting a minus-12 rating. The following season, Holzer spent the entirety with the Marlies, fine tuning his game and posting 23 points (5 goals, 18 assists) in 72 games with the farm club. This season, Holzer has put up 6 assists in 33 games with the Maple Leafs, while also putting up a plus-4 rating on a team that has been struggling as of late.
Korbinian provides depth to the Ducks, but can play a consistent game on a bottom pairing, when needed. He’s a big body presence, standing at 6’3, and continues to add strength to his frame. Calm with the puck and making smart decisions, Holzer can be the answer the Ducks need on their third pairing.
Brewer is purely a salary dump, and the value in this deal, for Toronto, is the draft pick.
