FANTASY PROFILE: CHRIS OWINGS, SS, ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

LOWS Ranking 16, Captains’ Value $3.74

The path to a starting shortstop role with the Arizona Diamondbacks is clear for former hot prospect Chris Owings. Didi Gregorious, who cut into Owings’ playing time in 2014 when Owings was healthy, was dealt to the Evil Empire (aka, New York Yankees) to replace the now-retired Derek Jeter. Now, the 23-year-old just has to get healthy.

And learn bat control.

And live up to expectations.

It’s safe to say Owings, who missed two months last season to a shoulder strain then had off-season shoulder surgery, won’t be drafted until late rounds in most fantasy leagues (if at all). Owings, who played 91 games in an injury-marred season last year, put up a respectable .261/.300/.406 line in 310 at-bats. Even more impressive, he hit .309 at his home park, Chase Field, where he stole 7 of his 8 bases and smashed 5 of his 6 triples. He didn’t hit well on the road (.217), but did smash 5 of his 6 homers and 8 of his 15 doubles away from home.

Owings is expected back on the field in mid-March. In recent reports, Arizona manager Chris Hale said Owings, who didn’t attend college, is progressing ahead of schedule. “I don’t have an exact return date,” Hale told The Arizona Republic. “But he’s past where I thought he was.”

The expectation for the Charleston, SC native is double figures in homers and steals with a decent average. There’s potential for more but the 3rd-year major leaguer probably needs a full year of seasoning before he jumps from late-round draft pick to fantasy relevant.
