Chris Stewart Traded to the Minnesota Wild

Breaking news: this afternoon, the Buffalo Sabres announced the trading of right wing Chris Stewart to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a 2nd-round draft pick in 2017.

The 27-year-old power forward from Toronto, Ontario was in the second year of his two year contract, which he signed while with the St. Louis Blues, for total of $8.3 million. The deal carries a $4.15 million cap hit.  The 6’2″ Stewart was traded by the St. Louis Blues to Buffalo as part of the Ryan Miller trade just before the 2014 NHL Trade Deadline. Labelled as an average skater, Stewart is a streaky player that falls in and out of line with his physical play. When he’s on, he’s a treat to have on your team but when he falls into his stints of poor play, it’s hard to notice him out there.  If he’s on his game, he could be a major factor down the stretch and into the playoffs.

The additional draft pick will be another beneficial piece in Tim Murray’s rebuild of the Buffalo Sabres. With the accelerated rise of all-star Zemgus Girgensons, as well as a few other young stars on the rise and the likely addition of one of Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel, the Sabres future continues to look brighter every day.
