A full set of fixtures take place this weekend in the Sky Bet League Two, with all the top seven sides playing at home, as are the two bottom clubs.
Before I bring you the weekend’s preview, here are the results of the three fixtures from Tuesday night:
Accrington Stanley vs. Burton Albion
Burton entered this game on a 13-game unbeaten run and could extend their lead above Shrewsbury to six points; a determined Accrington side have prolonged their unbeaten run to four following this 1-0 victory against the league leaders. Midfielder, Josh Windass, acquired the only goal of the game halfway through the first 45 minutes. Burton must now focus their attention on Saturday when they host Newport, while Accrington travel to Luton.
Cambridge United vs. A.F.C Wimbledon
Cambridge United remain in search for their first win since mid-January following this goalless draw at home against Wimbledon. Both sides sit mid table; a point relatively decent for them.
Portsmouth vs. Tranmere Rovers
A cracker took place at Fratton Park where a resurging Pompey side came from two goals down to beat Tranmere 3-2. Jennison Myrie-Williams gave the visitors the lead in the first half, before Kayode Odejayi doubled the Rovers’ lead early in the second half. Pompey looked destined to suffer their first defeat in six, but goals in the final 15 minutes from Craig Westcarr and Ryan Taylor doubly confirmed the victory for the hosts.
League Two Preview: 28th February 2015
On to Saturday’s action, then; here are all 12 fixtures:
Burton Albion vs. Newport County
Burton Albion lead the way in League Two despite admitting their first defeat in 14 matches away at Accrington on Tuesday night. The Brewers look poised to bounce back when they host a Newport County side that have slipped out of the playoffs following a home defeat last time out, but won last time on their travels, a 2-1 victory against Wycombe.
Cheltenham Town vs. Tranmere Rovers
Cheltenham Town occupy the final relegation place prior to kick off, whilst Tranmere, like Burton, played on Tuesday and were unlucky in a 3-2 defeat away to Portsmouth. Two away games in a week then for Rovers, as they look to earn points to push them further afield and out of the dreaded relegation pack. As for the Robins, caretaker manager, Russell Milton, is in search of his first win as boss, and Cheltenham are aiming for just their second win in 17 major games.
Hartlepool United vs. A.F.C Wimbledon
Hartlepool remain bottom but have turned things around at home in recent weeks, winning three out of four games at Victoria Park. The Pools are currently eight points from safety, and host a Dons side that will be spurred on following their 3-2 result over Luton last weekend, despite a goalless draw on the road on Tuesday night. For Hartlepool, well, they just need to triumph.
Luton Town vs. Accrington Stanley
Luton suffered two consecutive defeats last week both on the road, and they return to Kenilworth Road hoping to close the gap on Wycombe Wanderers. They host an Accrington side that are unbeaten in four, following three victories, including Tuesday night’s 1-0 win at home to league leaders, Burton, as well as last week’s draw.
Mansfield Town vs. Dagenham and Redbridge
Mansfield look set to bounce back from their downfall to Oxford last week as they prepare to face Dagenham and Redbridge. The Daggers also lost last week; their first in six, conveying form which has seen them climb out of the relegation zone. As for the Stags, they sit merely four points clear of the drop ahead of Saturday’s league fixtures.
Morecambe vs. Cambridge United
Morecambe welcome Cambridge United to the Globe Arena, and are seeking to progress after their victory away to Newport last time out. As for Cambridge, they managed a goalless draw at home to Wimbledon, before travelling to Morecambe, as they search for their first win since mid-January.
Plymouth Argyle vs. Bury
Following their Devon Derby victory, Plymouth host Bury at Home Park. Both sides currently occupy playoff places, with just goal difference separating the sides. Furthermore, both sides know defeat could witness them drop out of the playoffs, so the victory is all the more important for these teams.
Portsmouth vs. Oxford United
Both of these sides had a decent result last time and both found the net convincingly, particularly Portsmouth, who netted six away to Cambridge and three at home to Tranmere on Tuesday night. This is the second home game in a week for Pompey following their win against Tranmere, and will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to seven against Oxford. As for the U’s, last week’s win has lifted them six points clear of the drop, but will still be hopeful to avoid conceding at Fratton Park. A repeat of last season’s league result would suit the U’s, as they ran out the 4-1 winners.
Shrewsbury Town vs. Northampton Town
Following defeat on the road against Tranmere last weekend, Shrewsbury will be looking to continue their impressive unbeaten home record in the league, as they host Northampton Town. The Cobblers have been superb in 2015, and are chasing down a playoff place with the help of the league’s top scorer, Marc Richards. As for the Shrews, they look to close the gap on Burton, and move further afield of Wycombe.
Southend United vs. Carlisle
Hoping to avoid relegation this season, Carlisle have suffered three straight defeats, but the playoff hopefuls, Southend, have also suffered two blows in succession. There’s plenty at stake for both clubs, both with largely different ambitions this season. Both teams will be looking for Joe Pigott and Charlie Wyke to better their recent run in front of goal.
Wycombe Wanderers vs. Stevenage Borough
Wycombe have closed the gap behind Shrewsbury to just two points following last week’s win, and host a Stevenage side that are unbeaten in three as they look to regain a playoff place. Both sides scored well in their previous league fixture, with multiple different players on the score sheet also.
York City vs. Exeter City
York remain perilously close to the drop – one point clear, in fact – following last week’s capitulation at the hands of Northampton. Exeter, too, conceded three last time out at the hands of Devon rivals Plymouth. The Grecians will be desperate to bounce back from that result as they are without a win in six in the league. As for the Minstermen, they have won just twice at home in the league all season; a change is necessary if they’re to avoid the drop.
