Fantasy Profile: Jean Segura, SS, Milwaukee Brewers

FANTASY PROFILE: JEAN SEGURA, SS, MILWAUKEE BREWERS

LWOS RANKING 13, CAPTAIN’S VALUE: $9.15

The majority of Jean Segura’s success in the big leagues came in the first half of the 2013 season for the Milwaukee Brewers. In those magical first few months, he batted .325/.363/.487 with 11 HR and 27 SB. The second half of the season, his performance completely dropped off to the tune of .241/.268/.315 with just 1 HR and 17 SB. After a disappointing 2014, he has yet to return to the All-Star form of the first half of 2013, as his numbers last year were .246/.289/.326 with a measly 5 HR and 20 SB.

Many were not surprised at the drop off. As a player who made a lot of contact and had a minor league BABIP that hovered around .300, a .300 batting average in the majors was not out of the question, but the .349 BABIP he saw in the first half of 2013 meant that the .325 batting average would likely go down. He also outperformed his power expectations in those few months, as his 11 HR in that span were almost equal to half of the amount of total homers he hit in the minors (26 in 1755 PAs). Despite the discrepancy between the two halves of 2013, most thought that the real Jean Segura lied somewhere between the All-Star of the first half and the scrub of the second half.

Setting the stats aside for a moment, I’m willing to give Segura a mulligan for 2014. He had several things going on that were not  under his control that fantasy baseball, frankly, does not take into account. First, he got smacked in the face by a Ryan Braun practice swing and had to undergo surgery. Then, he battled hamstring and leg cramps all throughout the summer. Finally, and most tragically, his 9-month-old son passed away in mid-July after falling ill. Since I do not personally know Segura, it would be unfair for me to assume that these things directly affected his performance on the field, but as a human being, it’s hard to believe that they would not.

It is for that reason that I think Segura will be a nice bounce back candidate for 2015. Not only will 2014 be behind him, but he has spent the winter and off-season working on his swing and approach at the batters box, and by all accounts is ready for a new start. Don’t expect .325 with 11 HR and 27 SB in the first half, but a .265 average with 10 HR and 30 SB at year’s end would not be out of the question.
