Leafs Trade Daniel Winnik to Pittsburgh Penguins

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that they’ve dealt winger Daniel Winnik to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins send back prospect forward Zach Sill, a fourth round draft pick in 2015 and a second round draft pick in 2016.

The Leafs took a flyer on the 29-year-old Winnik last summer, signing him to a 1-year, $1.3 million contract. Winnick’s signing can be considered a success for the Leafs, as he’s been a very solid defensive player for Toronto, and a revelation on the penalty kill.  His solid two-way play has been one of the bright spots in what has been a tough season for Toronto.

Winnik will be an excellent addition to the bottom six of Pittsburgh, especially in the playoffs. He’s a UFA come July, so he comes as a low-risk rental player, especially with his low salary. Winnik has spent eight previous seasons in the NHL, last year with the Anaheim Ducks. The Penguins once again give up a second round pick for a rental, from 2016. Toronto retains 50% of Winnik’s salary.

For Toronto, this is yet another move that is being made to tear down the current team and get future assets for the rebuild. Zach Sill is a 6″ natural left winger, originally signed to an AHL contract in 2009-2010. He has played 42 games this season for the Pittsburgh Penguins with three points and 60 penalty minutes.
