Fantasy Profile: Starlin Castro, SS, Chicago Cubs

Hopefully 2014's Starlin Castro is the one he truly is, and not his abysmal 2013 season. Castro is just entering his prime and is capable of hitting .300.

FANTASY PROFILE: Starlin Castro, SS, Chicago Cubs

LWOS Ranking 6, Captain’s Value: $8.60

Hopefully 2014’s Starlin Castro is the one he truly is, and not his abysmal 2013 season. Already a 3 time All-Star at the age of 25, Castro is just entering his prime and is probably one of two shortstops who could possibly hit .300+ with 15+ home runs, the other being Troy Tulowitzki.

While Castro won’t more than likely stealing 20+ bases again (thanks to his poor base running abilities, showcased by his 64% career stolen base success percentage) I wouldn’t be surprised to see him steal at least 10. Castro is also going to be playing in a much better lineup this year, and should get the chance to drive in some more runs (if he is still batting 4th ). With Javier Baez more than likely starting the year at 2B, Castro should have no problem starting most of the year at SS (unless he gets hurt). Castro has hit 10+ home runs in the last 4 years while sporting a career .284 average (weighted down by his ’13 .245 average).

In the future Castro has prospect Addison Russell creeping up behind him, but other than maybe a September call-up, I do not think Russell will be forcing himself onto the Cubs roster. After 2015, I would question whether Castro is safe for holding the SS position.
