Fantasy Profile: Marcus Semien, 2B, Oakland Athletics
LWOS Ranking 28, Captain’s Value: $0.81
Marcus Semien isn’t a player with much fantasy value. Since being drafted by the White Sox on 2010, Semien hasn’t put any impressive numbers. In Triple AAA he had a decent .266/.368/.491 slash line and he also had a .859 OPS. In the majors, Semien only played 85 games (in 2 years) and his stats didn’t catch anyone’s attention, .240/.293/.380.
The good thing is that everything points towards Semien serving as the full time SS for the Athletics. “We are going to give him every opportunity to win the job” said Bob Melvin. This absolutely gives him the chance to improve himself.
One thing that I must mention is his BB% of last year (8.2%), which was higher than the average. If Marcus finds a way to keep putting himself on base next year, you’ll be seeing a player that could reach up to 40-60 runs next year but those numbers are still too low to make him a must have on your roster player. Another thing Semien lacks of is hustle. Of 83 SBO (Stolen base opportunities) he only had the courage to steal three bases. When batting with a base runner on (which happened 153 times last season), only 25 scored (17% of Base runners) so you’re not looking neither to a runner producer, a run scoring player or a stolen bases producer.
While the upside might be there, you’re looking to a player that is too much risk with very low reward. And because of the depth that there is in this position, I wouldn’t even think about drafting him, so my advice to you is: wait for him to get more experience in the majors before considering picking him up.
