Athleticism: B+
A well above average athlete who was a versatile tool on the field for Stanford. Featured outside the hashes, in the slot, in the backfield, and in the return game. Runs faster on the football field than he did at the combine, and top end speed is good, not great. Shows an extra gear he can hit to pull away from coverage and pursuit. A fluid and shifty athlete. Could star as a kick returner immediately and could be an eventual Pro Bowler on special teams.
Catching: C-
Below average pass catcher and will need some work before seeing the field on offense with any regularity. Hands are suspect and drops are prevalent. Had some issues with fumbles as well. Doesn’t adjust well to the ball thrown outside of his frame, especially low. Good leaping ability, but will get outmuscled at the catch point. Might be more suited as a return specialist than a contributor on offense.
Routes: C-
Average-to-below average with his route-running and ability to separate. More of an athlete than a football player at this point, as this indicates. Able to uncover on short routes, but doesn’t seem to be able to take the top off of a defense or consistently separate with his route patterns. Screen game is his best friend.
After Catch: A-
A great runner with the ball in his hands and is a playmaker on short throws and in the return game. Possesses a homerun gear to outpace angles and pull away to the end zone. Has shifty feet and good vision to setup his blocks and rip off big gains. A slippery runner with a powerful lower body that defenders will slide off of.
Blocking: B
Slightly above average as a blocker and possesses a thickly built frame suited for blocking in the running game. Possesses above average strength and technique. Has good aggression and is a physical blocker who seems to take his job in the running game seriously.
Red Flags: Durability
Bottom Line: Ty Montgomery was once considered a day one pick in the draft, but his inability to take the next step at Stanford will likely relegate him to day two. Montgomery’s biggest concern is the unnatural way he catches passes and his ability to separate from coverage. The most likely pro scenario for Montgomery is to return kicks and may even warrant some consideration as a third down back.
Comparison: Josh Cribbs
Grade: 8.1 (3rd Round)
