The Seahawks were so close to repeating as Super Bowl champions. After a mediocre start that led the media to panic, the Seahawks won 11 out of their last 12 games before finally losing in the Super Bowl to New England. This was a dominant team that was led by their defense. Anchors Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, and Earl Thomas helped right the ship and Marshawn Lynch carried the team on offense. The Seahawks, however, do not plan on being depressed after their narrow loss. They are prepared to re-sign Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch, and the team should have a little cap space left over to sign other players. They are determined to get back to the Super Bowl for the third straight year, and here are the moves they need to do to get there.
Seattle Seahawks 2015 Offseason: Top 3 Needs
Wide Receiver
Did you see what happened when Russell Wilson had a downfield target to throw to? Everyone who watched the Super Bowl knows what I am talking about and is secretly hoping that the Seahawks don’t sign a wide receiver. The current receiving corps in Seattle isn’t exactly great, as Doug Baldwin and company can disappear at times. Chris Matthews was an excellent surprise in the Super Bowl with his long catches, but will his play translate into a starting role in 2015? I expect the Seahawks to look into the draft, and if they could find a way to trade up and grab someone like DeVante Parker or take Sammie Coates with their 31st overall pick, this team would take a big step forward in 2015 and make sure defenses can’t cheat the run.
Cornerback
The Seahawks will also need to address one of the previous strengths at cornerback. Byron Maxwell has the chance to leave Seattle to get more money, and if he does, the Seahawks will be shallow at cornerback. Tharold Simon is a solid player, but Richard Sherman and Jeremy Lane are set to have offseason surgeries. Suddenly this terrifying secondary is lacking impact players, and the Seahawks will likely add depth in the draft. Carroll should work his magic on late-round picks and once again have this secondary ready to compete.
Offensive Line
Look for Seattle to address the offensive line this offseason. According to Pro Football Focus, the team was 19th in offensive line statistics and had the third-most penalties of any offensive line in the NFL. It helps to have Marshawn Lynch, who can’t be tackled, but if they had an average back, Seattle’s run blocking would be exposed. Although the Seahawks probably should not spend a high draft pick on the offensive line, I would not be surprised to see a third- or fourth-round pick spent on this need. If the Seahawks can cut the penalties down, their offense will be even scarier.
