FANTASY PROFILE: JHONNY PERALTA, SS, ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
LWOS Ranking 12, Captain’s Value: $3.88
Jhonny Peralta became the full-time starting shortstop for the Cleveland Indians in 2005 after long-time fan favorite Omar Vizquel left the Indians for free agency after the 2004 season. During his initial full-time season, Jhonny hit a career high 24 HR, drove in 78 runs, scored 82 runs with a career best OPS of .885. During his 10 full-time years, he has always played at least 140 games with the exception of 2013, when he served a 50-game suspension in the Biogenesis scandal. He has at least 10 HR in each season of his career, but his batting average has varied wildly from a high of .303 for the Tigers in 2013 to a low of .239 the previous year with the same Tigers.
Despite getting off to a miserable start last year with the Cardinals, he rebounded to hit 21 HR and drive in 75 runs. His OPS during the second half was just a notch below .800. According to defensive statistics, Peralta was a pleasant surprise for the Cardinals who gave up on defensive minded Pete Kozma to sign Peralta to a 4-year, $53 million contract. He has always been known for limited range but has been a steady fielder on balls he can reach. He is not a sexy pick. You know what you are going to get but there is not much upside. If you miss out on Ian Desmond, Hanley Ramirez and Jose Reyes or you are not willing to take a flyer on Troy Tulowitzki, Peralta would be a good stopgap. Unlike many shortstop possibilities, you should not expect any stolen bases, but a 15-18 HR, 70-75 RBI season should be within reach with an outside shot at a 20 HR, 80 RBI outcome. Put him on your list and don’t be disappointed if he winds up as your fantasy SS or MI.
