LWOS Ranking 23
Everth Cabrera has gone from a darling to fantasy owners chasing stolen bases to a man without a spot as a major league starter. Everth was selected by the San Diego Padres from the Colorado Rockies in a Rule 5 draft on December 11, 2008. Despite missing two months of his rookie season to a hand injury, he managed to steal 25 bases in 103 games. A hamstring injury in 2010 and the signing of Jason Bartlett as their regular shortstop by the Padres limited Cabrera to a total of 220 ABs in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
After being recalled from Tucson in 2012 due to a poor start and a trip to the disabled list for Bartlett, Cabrera had an exception year on the base paths, stealing 44 bases in 48 attempts for the season highlighted by 24 consecutive steals to start the season. Playing what to this point was a career high 115 games, he batted .246 with a .324 OBP. In 2013, Cabrera was selected to the All-Star team as a reserve and had a .291 average with 34 steals at the break. His suspension in August 2013 for 50 games in the Biogenesis scandal ended his 2013 season and he did not recover in 2014. The Padres released him in December of 2014 after batted only .232 and stole 18 bases.
As of today, the Orioles appeared to have an agreement with Cabrera for the 2015 season pending a physical and completion of the paper work. Their success with Nelson Cruz last year after his involvement in Biogenesis may have encouraged them to try again. Cabrera also was involved in a traffic incident where he was charged with driving under the influence of marijuana. Cabrera has little to offer other than steals and will battle Jonathan Schoop and Ryan Flaherty for playing time. In deep leagues with several bench spots, he might be worth a late round flyer. Other than that, STAY AWAY!
