FANTASY PROFILE: JONATHAN VILLAR, SS, HOUSTON ASTROS
LWOS Ranking 34, Captains’ Value -$4.28
Jonathan Villar can steal bases. In his minor league career, he has stolen 190 bases and been caught 48 times. His major league rate is almost 75%, he has stolen 35 bases, and been caught 12 times. But the question is can he hit and walk enough to get a full time position. His career ground ball rate of 57% combined with his speed and ability to take a walk gives signals that he might get it one day. The Astros had ideas of combining Altuve and Villar to form a middle infield combination who could get on base, steal bases, and score runs. The Astros have appeared to sour on Villar, as he has spent parts of the last two seasons in the minors. The Astros have signed ex-Oakland shortstop Jed Lowrie and plan on using him as their every day starter at shortstop. As of now, Villar appears to be an extra infielder on the big league club or slated to return to the minors. Unless something about the Astros line-up changes, Villar does not show much promise for fantasy owners. But his ability to steal bases makes him one to keep an eye on if playing time increases.
