According to a report from the New York Daily News, the New York Knicks will buy out power forward Amare Stoudemire, ending what has been a long and frustrating saga for the once highly hyped free agent signing. Stoudemire is expected to be placed on waivers today, and will be bought out once he clears. He then would be free to sign with another NBA team, and it is believed that Stoudemire hopes to join a playoff contender.
Stoudemire left the Phoenix Suns and signed a five-year deal worth nearly $100 million in 2010. He is now in the final year of the deal. His time in New York has been marred by injury and his own general ineffectiveness.
Stoudemire had said before the All-Star break that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to stay with the team, as he knows that time is running out on his career and he wants to chase an NBA Title. The Knicks currently own the NBA’s worst record at just 10-43 on the year. The season doesn’t look like it will get better any time soon with Carmelo Anthony recently announcing that he will be shutting down his season to rest an injured shoulder.
Anthony talked about Stoudemire’s decision, saying that it was hard for him to believe Stoudemire was leaving, but that if his friend wanted to play for a contender that “nobody should hold that away from him.”
“One of the main reasons why I’m a New York Knick today was because of him. To see him leave, to see the situation where it’s at right now, I know what he wants and you have to respect that,” Anthony added.
