Aston Villa have unveiled Tim Sherwood as their new manager, who has signed a contract until the 2017-2018 season. The 46 year old has been linked with various clubs since being sacked by former club Tottenham Hotspur in May 2014.This decision comes after Villa’s former manager Paul Lambert’s continual poor form resulted in his sacking; the Villains have not won in ten games in all competitions, scoring just two goals. Aston Villa announced the decision from their website earlier today, with reports that Sherwood was set to sign flourishing just a few hours prior to the official announcement.
Aston Villa Appoint Tim Sherwood as Manager
Paul Lambert was relieved of his duties as manager early in the week and Villa have moved quickly in appointing a new manager. Sherwood will take charge of a deflated Villa side who lie 18th in the Premier League. Sherwood’s aim will involve making sure the Claret and Blues primarily avoid the relegation zone at all costs. As well as this, goals have been a rarity for Villa, with only 12 in the Premier League this season—by the far the worst of all Premier League teams.
A club statement revealed their delight at confirming the appointment of “one of English football’s most highly sought after managers”. His win percentage as Spurs manager was 59%, the best of any Spurs manager in their Premier League history ( via BBC Sport). Sherwood himself is looking forward to his latest challenge in management, saying he “can’t wait to get started” and is “really looking forward to the challenge”. He also revealed he was he was honoured to now be manager of “one of the biggest clubs in English football”.
Aston Villa are set to play Leicester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup tomorrow at home. Sherwood’s first Premier League game will see him face Stoke City the following Saturday, where Villa and Sherwood will be desperate for a win to help see them lifted out of the relegation zone as quickly as possible.
