FANTASY PROFILE: BRANDON PHILLIPS, 2B, CINCINNATI REDS

LWOS Ranking 24, Captain’s Value: $5.92

Remember Brandon Phillips? It does not seem that long ago that he was one of the few second basemen who could give you good power, decent speed and a solid batting average. He was not going to hurt you in any areas, and was truly an all-around solid player.

What happened to that guy?

Brandon spent some time on the disabled list last year, and had career lows across the board, not counting his stint with the Indians. He was actually on track for a decent year before he got hurt. His totals still would have been down from what we have come to expect from him in the past, but they still would have been respectable. However, he struggled after coming back from his injury. Fantasy managers who have been around the block a few times might look down the draft board; see Phillips sitting there in the deep triple digits, and start getting ideas.

Brandon’s speed is all but gone. His injury last year was to his finger, not his wheels. Those are things affected by age. He’s still hitting for power, but those numbers were also down pre-injury. The Reds lineup and his position in the batting order are also different than they were before, so many of his counting stats will likely be lower than the Phillips of old might achieve.

The conclusion here is to not rely on the 2015 version of Phillips bouncing back to his old self. Stick to the projections on this one.
