David “Playtime” Putvin is a Utah fighter out of Jeremy Horn’s Elite Performance Gym. Putvin Was 7-0 as an amateur and is now 7-0 as a professional. All of his professional wins have been by submission and most of them have been in the first or second round. He has notable wins over some of Utah’s top lightweights such as Jordan Clements and Brian Thomas. Within Utah, Putvin has been labeled as unstoppable.
David Putvin will face Jerod Spoon March 28th in Oklahoma. After Putvin fights Spoon and hopefully comes out victorious, he hopes to catch the attention of the UFC and debut at featherweight before the end of the year. While Putvin walks around about 170 lbs or more, but is willing to diet right and do what it takes to get down to featherweight. Even though he currently fights at lightweight, the UFC’s lightweight division has almost too many fighters and Putvin feels he could make more noise in the featherweight division in a shorter amount of time. Another win for Putvin could certainly put himself in position for an invitation into the UFC Octagon.
I was able to speak with Putvin and he seemed very excited about his fighting career. He is only 22 years old, but has much experience in a variety of martial arts and has trained jiu-jitsu since he was 5 years old. Putvin and his brothers have gone to Jeremy Horn’s gym since he was 13 and have trained mixed martial-arts to this day. Despite his age, Putman has years of fighting experience. He is calm and relaxed in fights because he really enjoys being in the cage.
Putvin is nicknamed “Playtime” as his father has always called it playtime when Putvin was training martial-arts. Even as a boy he was in his element and enjoyed the training. Even as a grown man, it is still his playtime. He enjoys entertaining the fans during his fight entrances.
When I asked Putvin about his upcoming fight with Spoon, he said “I really don’t study my opponents that much and I don’t believe in game-plans, I adjust and react by instinct as the fight goes on.” Even though all of Putvin’s wins are by submission, he will take any type of win he can get. If he sees an opening for a submission, Putvin will of course take it, but he is by no means opposed to a KO or TKO victory. Putvin has actually let a submission go in the past just to add more excitement to the fight, but he found himself in danger later and will never just let go of a submission again.
I asked Putvin what other fighters should expect from him when they step in the cage with him and he said “Expect somebody that is going to move forward, never quit and is very strong mentally.”
Putvin can take a shot to the face and just keep coming. He prides himself on his durability and his ability to take the fight to his opponent. As an undefeated fighter, he is by far one of the hottest prospects in Utah and the UFC should keep their eye on this young man because he has the makings of a star.
Putvin has enjoyed his fights in the smaller shows, but is determined to fight on the big stage in the UFC Octagon.
