League 2 Preview: 10th February 2015

Games are coming thick and fast now in the SkyBet League Two as we have a full schedule of fixtures this Tuesday night.

New league leaders Burton Albion host a Wimbledon side that are progressing. The Dons are unbeaten in their last three outings, but travel to a Brewers side who themselves are now ten games unbeaten, and haven’t lost in their last six home games.

Second placed Wycombe play at home against a Plymouth side that won their first game in seven following a 1-0 victory over Accrington Stanley on Saturday. The Chairboys won by the same result, on the road to Cambridge, with both sides knowing this is a tougher fixture. Wycombe are aiming to regain top spot, failing that, at least hoping to remain in the automatic promotion places, whilst the Pilgrims look to push their promotion charge back on track.

Shrewsbury were knocked off the top spot and slipped to third following a draw at home to Southend on Saturday, but Tuesday night they travel north to a Carlisle side that won on the road last time out. Debutant Tyrone Barnett levelled late on for the Shrews against the Shrimpers, whilst new signing Charlie Wyke netted twice last time out against fellow strugglers Tranmere.

Luton stay fourth despite only picking up a point on the road to Oxford last time out. They host a York City side who have slipped into the relegation zone following another home defeat, this time to Dagenham and Redbridge. The Minstermen have faired better on the road, but Luton are strong at Kenilworth Road and have one of the best home defences in the league.

Southend very nearly claimed all three points at Shrewsbury on Saturday and the Shrimpers are unbeaten in four as a result. They host Cheltenham Town who sit just one place above the drop following a home defeat to league leaders Burton. Paul Buckle’s men have won just once in their last 12 outings, and will be fearful of relegation as a result.

Newport County stay in the playoffs despite losing four consecutive games. They have also lost manager Justin Edinburgh, who joins League One’s Gillingham. The Exiles host Tranmere, with the Rovers losing their first game in four last time out. They need points to push away from the relegation zone, whilst Newport need to record a win if they hope to achieve promotion this season.

Bury stay seventh following their draw against Exeter but are just two points above Plymouth now. They travel to Stevenage, who themselves have lost three games in succession Both sides need the points in order to push for promotion, with the Boro four points behind Bury before Tuesday nights games.

Exeter are one of the sides just outside the playoffs and host a Cambridge side that haven’t won in the league since their 4-0 capitulation of Newport County on the 17th January. Exeter themselves haven’t won in three, with two draws on the road in that run.

Northampton are flying, and they travel to a Hartlepool side who sit nine points from safety. Cobblers have won five on the bounce, and top scorer Marc Richards has scored three in his last two games. Before Saturday, the Pools had picked up four points from a possible six, but the relegation strugglers must find wins if they’re to avoid relegation, especially at home.

Before Saturday’s defeat to Northampton, Morecambe had previously drawn five successive games. They host Mansfield who will be boyed on from their victory over Stevenage last time out, and they move out of the relegation zone as a result.

Oxford United sit 15th after they earned a point at home to Luton on Saturday. They travel north to face an Accrington side that have lost five games in succession, and have slipped to 19th in the league since a result, just two points above the drop. Oxford are unbeaten in three games, and will be hoping to claim all three points to push them further afield of the relegation pack.

The final game comes at Victoria Road in a relegation battle between Dagenham and Redbridge and Portsmouth. Pompey claimed their first victory in ten at home to struggling Hartlepool on Saturday, and face a Dagenham side that have won their last two games, lifting them from the drop zone to 17th. Points could be crucial for both sides, as they are both still precariously close to the drop zone.
