FANTASY PROFILE: ANTHONY RENDON, 2B, WASHINGTON NATIONALS
LWOS Ranking 3, Captain’s Value: $17.65
Anthony Rendon was the 6th overall pick in the 2011 MLB draft from a very talented first round group of players. Rendon didn’t spend much time in the minors though, starting in rookie ball in 2012 and climbing up through the minors to make his professional debut by April of 2013. After a good start in 2013 (100 wRC+ and 1.5 WAR in 98 games, but not much in fantasy value), Rendon erupted onto the scene in 2014 slashing .287/.351/.473 with 21 HR, 111 R scored, 83 RBI, and 17 SB. That is an impressive line for anybody let alone a 24 year-old.
But wait there’s more! There is no reason to think that Rendon can’t keep up this production. His plate discipline is solid post ing a 7.9 BB% and 17.5 K% in 2013 and 8.5 BB% and 15.2 K% in 2014, both being league average to slightly above league average. In his first two seasons, he has had no problem making contact (87.3%) and getting the ball in the air (37.6 FB%). Another great sign is that over his first two seasons, Rendon typically lays off pitches out of the zone (22.5 O-Swing%), but when he does swing at those pitches he makes good contact (71.0 O-Contact%). His legs are young enough to put up double digit steals as well. Also keep in mind that Rendon will have 2B/3B eligibility as well, bringing value in versatility.
Rendon is the complete package on a loaded Washington Nationals team. He will be an early round pick in most leagues (1st –2nd round) and should be a fantasy stud this season.
