FANTASY PROFILE: KOLTEN WONG, 2B, ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
LWOS Ranking 9, Captain’s Value: $9.29
Since the Cardinals drafted Wong with the 22nd overall pick in 2011, he has been groomed as the heir apparent to the 2nd base position. When the Cardinals traded David Freese to the Angels and moved second base incumbent Matt Carpenter to third base, Wong became the de facto starter. A poor start to the season followed by a stint on the disabled list due to a sore shoulder resulted in a lack luster first half performance. After a stint in the minor leagues, Wong returned with a more aggressive approach at the plate and increased his fly ball rate from 28% to 38% resulting in eleven Home Runs from July 6th to the end of the season.
While it remains to be seen if the 2nd half power stroke is for real, his stolen base success rate (20 of 24) would indicate the running game is a real part of his major league and fantasy game. Counting totals may depend upon his spot in the batting line-up. If he ends up in the 8th spot in the line-up batting ahead of the pitcher, his runs scored and stolen base totals may suffer. But I am a Wong believer and would think 15 home runs and 25 stolen bases are well within reach. For him to move to a spot among the premier fantasy second basemen, his 2014 batting average of .249 will need to raise to a level much closer to his minor league composite average which is well over .300. Wong is ranked anywhere from 9th to 15th among fantasy second basemen. If you miss out on Cano, Rendon and Altuve, Wong would be a great fallback option. I am looking for a breakout season.
