Auburn Lands #1 Overall Recruit, DE Byron Cowart

Defensive end Byron Cowart, generally considered the No. 1 high school prospect in the country signed his letter of commitment with Auburn today.

Defensive end Byron Cowart, generally considered the No. 1 high school prospect in the country signed his letter of commitment with Auburn today. The 6-4, 258-pound Cowart had 11 sacks and 21 tackles for a loss his senior season in Seffner, Florida.

Cowart reportedly had his choices narrowed down to Florida and Auburn. Ironically, it was the firing of Will Muschamp as Florida Gators head coach, and Auburn’s subsequent hiring of Muschamp as defensive coordinator that made the difference in this case. In making his announcement, Cowart said his close relationship with Muschamp was the deciding factor in choosing to go to the Auburn Tigers.

Cowart is the first overall No. 1 prospect ever signed by Auburn. Obviously this is a big get for Gus Malzahn and the Tigers, playing in the tough SEC West. Overall the Tigers and their rivals the Alabama Crimson Tide, are putting together great classes.
