Athleticism: A
Great athletic ability, all the more impressive considering his somewhat taller frame. An agile runner who makes quick cuts. Excellent hip and ankle flexibility and balance. Playing speed is outstanding once he gets a few steps and is nearly impossible to track down from behind once he breaks into the second level. Smooth acceleration with a true homerun gear to be a game-changing runner. Has intriguing kick return potential early on.
Inside Run: B
An inside-outside runner who is dangerous up the middle and capable of gashing defenses running between the tackles. Reads second level blocks very well and lowers his pads into contact. A balanced runner who is tough to chop down from below the waist and shows impressive leg drive to compensate for his lack of a powerful frame. Falls forward most often than not. Doesn’t push the pile; slips through it for an extra yard. Doesn’t possess the type of power in his upper body to break head-on tackles.
Outside Run: B-
An extremely difficult runner to track down in space and is dangerous once he turns the corner. Moves quickly out of his cuts and will move back towards the middle of the field once he reaches the sideline. Lacks instantaneous burst out of his stance and can be dropped behind the line of scrimmage on slow developing plays to the outside. Lacks patience on outside runs and can be contained when defenses play aggressively at the line. Would have benefitted greatly from better blocking.
Blocking: B
A willing and aware pass blocker who is capable of anchoring initially and will not get steamrolled or play matador in pass pro. Lacks the ideal frame and body power as a pass protector, but better than most at this stage. Aware of where his quarterback is and willing to get in front and block for his quarterback on runs.
Receiving: C
Shows decent hands out of the backfield and shows the ability to make big plays when given the ball in space. Was not asked to run a variety of pass routes. Somewhat underutilized in the passing game and is not an ideal third down back.
Red Flags: None
Bottom Line: An inside-outside runner, Tevin Coleman trashed Big Ten defenses for over 2,000 yards as a junior this season. Coleman shows great effort as a runner, blocker, and passer, and while he might not possess ideal skill in the latter to phases, he is not the type of player who must be subbed out on obvious passing downs. Coleman has the potential to become a feature back in the NFL, and is blocking scheme versatile.
Comparison: Darren McFadden
Grade: 8.7 (2nd Round)
