FANTASY PROFILE: Jon Singleton, 1B, Houston Astros
LWOS 1B Ranking 24, Captains Value $-2.89
What a rough start to a career Jon Singleton had. A .168 batting average is hard to swallow even in this low offensive output era we are in. Anytime you are looking up at Mario Mendoza with great envy it is not good. Although, Singleton has greatly surpassed Mendoza’s career home run total of 4 with 13 round trippers in just 362 PAs. Singleton has to cut down the whiffs if he is going to retain his playing time at 1st base. The Astros have added Gattis and also retained Chris Carter who could both fill the 1st base position if Jon Singleton can not improve the 37% K rate he had last year. If he can bring that number to 25% and get a full season of ABs, Singleton could blast 30+ bombs.
The scouts have him as an elite power hitter and in this era he is worth a flyer in most leagues. Points leagues will want to avoid having him in the lineup until he proves he is not going to strike out 30% of the time. He is a must own in all keeper and redraft leagues for the power potential. The risk is there that he will under perform again or just not get ABs. This is what we mean by risk/reward players. If you can risk a little to get him do it, just don’t bet the farm on him.
