HARRISON, NJ (February 2, 2015) — The New York Red Bulls announced today that Australian midfielder Tim Cahill has left the club by mutual agreement.
Per league rules, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
This move is the latest in a series of transactions that have signaled a new philosophy in the organization.
Cahill, after proving himself absolutely indispensable in 2013, was often absent in 2014 due to his continued responsibilities for the Australian National Team. Sources around the club reported Cahill having attitude issues, and then finally, Kristian Dyer of Big Apple Soccer reported that he attempted to renegotiate his contract after the 2013 season, but was denied by Red Bull GmbH. This may have been the impetus for Cahill’s attitude change between 2013 and 2014. If that’s the case, then Cahill may have always had an eye on the proverbial door.
Cahill signed with New York as a designated player in July of 2012. The all-time leading goal scorer in Australian history played a pivotal role for his country as Australia won the Asian Cup on Saturday. In 2013, the former Everton star led the Red Bulls with 11 goals in 27 appearances. He was named team MVP and earned MLS Best XI and MLS All-Star selections. Cahill played a large role in the 2013 late season surge for the Supporter’s Shield, scoring seven of his goals and adding two assists, in the final 11 games.
“This decision was not made lightly, and it is the result of many conversations between our staff, Tim, and his agent,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Ali Curtis. “After much deliberation, we have agreed that this decision is best for all involved. We thank Tim for his service to the organization. He positively impacted the growth of the beautiful game in the United States, MLS and for the Red Bulls. We are pleased that Tim will continue to be an ambassador for Red Bull moving forward.”
“I’ve enjoyed every moment of my time at the Red Bulls and leave with great memories,” said Cahill. “I joined with the ambition of helping to grow and positively affect soccer in the US and I feel immensely proud of what we achieved as a team during my time in the MLS. Winning the Supporter’s Shield, was without doubt, one of the best moments I have experienced in my career and I am now looking forward to my next chapter, of which I will announce in due course.”
