Red Devils Advocate: Manchester United Summer Wish List

The January transfer window is always a difficult one to predict. With it arriving approximately half-way through the season it is a fantastic opportunity for teams to strengthen their weakest areas in preparation for the business end of the season. However teams never want to lose players midway through the season which often leads to clubs majorly overpaying. This could be the reason that Manchester United have been very quiet so far this window. With only a matter of days left in this transfer window, United’s sole acquisition has been that of Victor Valdes on an 18-month loan. As always there have been wild rumours, like the paper talk suggesting Lionel Messi was on his way to Old Trafford which would be incredible but totally unnecessary, many of these moves are proposed to be happening in during the summer window. It may be too late to strengthen their squad but who should United be setting their sights on?

Red Devils Advocate: Manchester United Summer Wish List

Mats Hummels

The Borussia Dortmund captain and centre-half has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a long time now, however it is now looking more likely than before. The fact that Dortmund are struggling at joint bottom of the Bundesliga, alongside the German’s comments this season where he has called the club “pathetic” and the fact he has expressed some confusion over his future all suggest that he could be on his way out at the end of this season and United must make him the absolute top priority to secure his signature. The no-nonsense defender would be the perfect solution for United’s current leaky back four (or five) and his competent footwork would fit in perfectly with Louis Van Gaal’s total football style of play.

Kevin Strootman

Roma’s marauding midfield enforcer and Van Gaal’s fellow country man has often been mentioned as a player that United want and need. He is a strong player at the heart of Roma’s midfield who is a key player both in attack and in defence. His gritty play would be invaluable in front of an inexperienced defence. In addition his impressive passing and creative spark would be ideal to bridge the gap between the leading line and the back four, this midfield dominance is something in particular that United have lacked this season. However he has recently picked up an injury that United must be sure to keep an eye on. Provided he stays fit, Strootman would be a great signing and to many it could be seen as an upgrade on what Marouane Fellani currently has to offer.

Nicholas Otamandi

Valencia’s Argentinian centre half is strong and reliable as well as being very influential at the back. He has made an impressive start to life in la liga and has drawn the attention of European elite. As well as having the talent he would fit in well personally at United due to his strong friendship with fellow Argentines Marcos Rojo and Angel di Maria. As long as Manchester United don’t overpay for him a move for Otamendi could be a very smart one.

Although United have a lot of money to spend this coming window it is imperative that they make intelligent purchases that will benefit the squad. There is no need to waste money on substandard players or bolstering an already strong attack but United must ensure they sign quality defensive players if they want to fight for success once more.
