Sky Bet League Two Review: 27th January 2015

Two fixtures took place on a cold Tuesday night in League 2, with 15th placed Accrington Stanley hosting play-off hopefuls Bury, whilst relegation threatened Dagenham and Redbridge travelled to FA Cup 4th round participants Cambridge United.

I begin at the Crown Ground where Accrington Stanley were the home side against an in form Bury side. Bury, regardless of their result, would stay in 7th place and occupy the final play-off place, however a victory would see them move three points clear of Stevenage in 8th, and close the gap to two points behind Newport County. Accrington never really got going in this game, and it took until the second half before they really created any opportunity of note. As for the Shakers, they were on top in the first 45, with defender Nathan Cameron going close. It was the defender who found the net for the the away side just nine minutes from time, which turned out to be the only goal of the game. Accrington stay in 15th, but find themselves only 6 points above what is looking like a pile up of clubs now involved in a relegation battle. As for Bury, they remain 7th, and have a bit of breathing space above the other clubs striving to reach the playoffs. Stanley travel to Northampton on Saturday to face a Cobblers side who have won three games on the bounce, as for Bury, they travel to 3rd placed Burton Albion, who themselves will be looking for all three points following two away draws.

The other fixture took place at the Abbey Stadium, where Cambridge played host to relegation zone fearful Dagenham and Redbridge. The U’s last fixture here was an excellent goalless draw against Premier League side Manchester United in the FA Cup, and prior to that have won three on the bounce in the league. They were up against a Daggers side who have scored just once in their previous six games. It started as expected, with on loan midfielder Cameron McGeehan netting his third in as many games after just 23 minutes. The goal came from a set piece, as did Dagenham’s equaliser midway through the second half, with left midfielder Ashley Hemmings bagging his fourth of a frustrating campaign for the Essex side. It finished level, with Cambridge remaining in 12th. As for Dagenham, they move up one place at the expense of Carlisle, of which they share the same amount of points, 27, along with 21st placed Tranmere Rovers. It’s becoming congested at the bottom end of the table, with 16th placed Oxford United and 23rd placed Carlisle being separated by just three points. The result was good for both sides, with Daggers moving up slightly, and the U’s now eight points off the playoffs with a game still in hand. Dagenham host Cheltenham Town this Saturday, with the Robins being one of those clubs in the fight, sitting on 30 points. Cambridge travel to rivals and 4th placed Luton Town, who are currently 11 points above them in the table.

Some exciting fixtures lay ahead in this Saturday’s list of games as we are deep in the crunch time of this campaign, and I’ll bring the you League 2 preview in the next few days.
