FANTASY PROFILE: VICTOR MARTINEZ, 1B, DETROIT TIGERS

LWOS Ranking 7, Captain’s Value $20.47

In Fantasy Baseball, one thing that is helpful is to have a healthy dose of skepticism and question everything. This certainly holds true for someone such as Victor Martinez who reached a career high in Home Runs (36) in his mid-30s and has a history of missing extended time (the entire 2012) season due to injury.

The power aspect of his game does not appear to be sustainable. Last year, he had a career high 16% HR/FB rate. In comparison, this is much higher than his career total of 10.7% and over two times higher than his totals in 2011 (7.3%) & 2013 (7.2%). Even with this factored in, Martinez should provide 15-20 Home Run power.

Despite the likely drop in power for 2015, Martinez still looks on track to provide plenty of value. While his power numbers were out of pattern, his high batting average was not. 2014 was his fifth consecutive season hitting over .300 and his BABIP of .316 also matched his career total. He should also have many opportunities to score & drive in runs playing in the middle of what should be a strong Tigers lineup.
