Tottenham Talkline: Get Behind Emmanuel Adebayor

After he was booed off the pitch against Sheffield United, it's time for Spurs fans to get Behind Emmanuel Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor made his return to the Spurs starting eleven at home to Sheffield United. His average performance was verbally attacked by a large section of Spurs fans. Should Adebayor be booed by his own fans? It’s been an eon since he last played. Get behind Emmanuel Adebayor, instead of getting on his back.

Of course, football fans will never shy away from voicing their opinion on their players. But, surely booing a player off the pitch is not going to help them improve? Adebayor did not have an inspiring 30 minutes when he was subbed on, to no real surprise. If Lionel Messi had a long break due to family reasons, he wouldn’t be banging in goals straight away either. The argument is probably along the lines of season tickets, money and the ability of fans to express their own opinion, but at the end of the day, one performance really isn’t worth booing that much. If Spurs fans believe tabloids, then of course everything about Adebayor must be true. Therefore “Voodoo” and “Juju curses” have caused Adebayor to return home to his family. Likewise, these family issues are obviously no reason to be off work.

This poisonous, toxic view needs to be eradicated. But, it won’t. Far too many football fans base their opinions on tabloid newspapers; nearly all of which are simply sensationalist and bigoted. No one really knows the situation with Adebayor. Fans, therefore, shouldn’t even bother trying to fathom why he was missing from action for so long. Instead, they should support him on the pitch and help him hit top form. These are personal issues that Adebayor will soon overcome if he can start performing on the pitch; and this can only be done if fans get behind him again.

When on form, Adebayor is the high-class striker Spurs need. Sure, Harry Kane is a promising, effective option for the starting eleven currently. But, Adebayor’s ability cannot be doubted. There’s the usual spiel of lazy, lackluster, languid performances from the Togolese Talisman, yet the ability of this player still shines through, and A front of Kane and Adebayor could be a good combination. As demonstrated throughout his career so far, Kane is willing to run for the full 90 minutes, helping out the midfield and defence but also running at the opposition defence. Sheer hard work and determination have shot him to stardom, but, admittedly, his finishing and goalscoring isn’t hard work, it’s talent. Adebayor, perhaps, does less high pressing, but offers himself out wide for passes and links up attacks as well as finishing with deadly efficiency too. Isn’t that a good front two? Two unique players that perform differently, however, sometimes when the defence is hard to break down, a little bit of magic is needed. Adebayor is the man to perform that magic trick.

Adebayor is experienced at 30 years-of-age. He’s been around the block long enough to know that this sticky return to the first team will only last as long as he doesn’t score. That’s how fickle football fans are, unfortunately. In a few months time after grabbing some goals and proving himself once again to the Spurs fans, all will be forgotten: Memories. But, if the torrent of unnecessary, spiteful, childish abuse continues, his improvement will be hampered. Stop the booing, start the supporting. Support Adebayor.
