Fantasy Profile: Yasmani Grandal, C, Los Angeles Dodgers
Pos. Rank 15, Captains Values -$0.12
Yasmani Grandal, the hard-hitting Cuban-American, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers from the San Diego Padres in a multi-player swap back in December. He will be expected to be the full time catcher for Mattingly and Co with a little time spent at 1B.
Grandal had his full taste of the majors last year and was deemed ultimately a success. He did play in 2012 and 2013 but with very limited at bats (226 AB in 2012 and 108 AB in 2013 due to a knee injury that required surgery). Grandal crushed 15 homers last season for a .401 slugging percentage and .175 ISO in 443 plate appearances. This can surely be categorized as above average power. His .225 average was a bit low but that could have been due to a .277 babip. I have no problem seeing Grandal hit in between .240-.250 with better luck. He did tend to strike out a lot posting a 26% K but you will get that with power hitters as they sometimes tend to sell short on contact for power. His 13.1% BB rate, though, shows me he had good plate discipline and could ultimately cut down on those strikeouts in the future, as well as provide good value for OBP only leagues.
I believe his ranking is solid. However I do believe he has some upside (he is only 26 and was a top rated prospect) and if he falls late in the draft he could possible be a steal for your team.
