Legendary American Soccer Club, the New York Cosmos have announced that they will play a regular season match at MCU Park located at Brooklyn’s Famous Coney Island on Saturday May 2nd at 7pm. The opponent for this North American Soccer League match will be the Ottawa Fury FC and this match will be one of many highlights for the NASL Spring Season.
The Cosmos believe that the time is right to play a home match at MCU Park, which is home to the Brooklyn Cyclones Baseball Team, as well as being only feet away from the famous boardwalk. New York will also be debuting its newest player, famous international star Raul this Spring in hopes of capturing the clubs 7th NASL Crown.
Brooklyn has recently seen a surge in sports clubs calling the borough home as the NBA’s Nets call Brooklyn home as well as the Cyclones baseball club and soon, the New York Islanders of the NHL will be playing its home games at the Barclay Center.
MCU Park seats around 7,500 and a large crowd is expected to witness one of America’s most famous soccer clubs play in one of the most iconic of locations in America, Coney Island, home of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs, the Cyclone Roller Coaster and the boardwalk.
The start of the NASL Spring Season will see the debut of the Cosmos newest acquisition, number 7, Raul. Raul will make his American Soccer debut after a very successful run with Real Madrid, which he played for from 1994 until 2010. Raul set many records while playing for one of the most prestigious soccer clubs in the world. Among those records that were set by the striker, 323 goals, an amazing feat considering the talent that the club has had over the years. Raul is considered a very technical striker with a powerful shot as well as an astounding ball handler. Raul is creative on and off the ball and rises to any occasion in that he can receive almost any type of pass or cross from his teammates or find a teammate and feed them the ball. Raul left Real Madrid in 2010 and signed a two-year contract with FC Schalke 04 of Bundesliga and played for the club until 2012 when he then signed with Al Sadd of the Qatar Stars League and played until late 2013.
The news of playing a regular season match in Brooklyn and the signing of Raul are not the only offseason news created by the Cosmos, the club also announced the creation of a Reserve Club that will play in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). The New York Cosmos B will begin play this upcoming season and participate in the North East Region’s North Atlantic Conference and play clubs such as the Brooklyn Italians, the New York Athletic Club and the Rhode Island Reds. The New York Cosmos join the Carolina RailHawks, the Atlanta SilverBacks and Minnesota United as NASL Clubs that have Reserve Clubs playing in the NPSL.
It was quite an offseason for the Cosmos and they are hoping that the string of good luck and great press pays off with a successful Spring Season followed by a great Fall Season and hopefully, another Soccer Bowl Victory.
