AFCON15- Gabon 0:1 Congo (Group A)

Congo go top of Group A after beating Gabon in Bata

Gabon had the chance to qualify for the next round of the AFCON15 but as it stands they will have to wait till the final round of group matches after losing to Congo.

Gabon 0:1 Congo

We saw a tight game in the first half as both sides struggled to take control of the game but Frederic Bulot almost opened the scoring with a superb strike just five minutes into the game. Gabon had a chance to score but it was off the right post from Bulot.

Malick Evouna flicked a deep cross into the path of Bulot who had his shot tipped over by Christoffer Mafoumbi. Congo had a good chance to take a lead but Arnold Bouka Moutou fired his shot into the side netting. Evouna was next to threaten but saw his deflected shot wide go wide. Levy Madinda controlled a lofted pass ball well before shooting past the right woodwork, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit his free kick over the wall but the goalkeeper palmed it away, it was to be the last kick of the opening half.

Congo took the lead early in the second half as Oniangue capitalised on some sloppy defending by Gabon to put Congo ahead. Ondele and Bruno Ecuele Manga got in each other’s way in an attempt to head a corner kick clear presenting Oniangue with the chance.

Gabon goalkeeper denied Oniangue from what would be his second of the night. He saw his volley saved by Didier Ovono to keep the score at 0-1. Gabon kept pushing for the equaliser, Aubamenyang headed wide and Bulot’s effort came off the post half way through the second half.

Congo were happy to defend their goal and although Gabon applied lots of pressure, it was not enough to level the score or perhaps go on to win.

Congo will now be on top of Group A after a draw with hosts Equatorial Guinea and a win over Gabon going into the last round of group matches.

After an impressive start to the tournament Gabon came into this game with lots of confidence and start the game in that manner. They almost scored five minutes into the game.
