In a twist of events, McLaren’s engine supplier from 2015 onwards, Honda is allowed in-season engine developments that rivals Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault has been granted as per the regulations. The regulations previously stated that only the engine manufacturers which entered from 2014 were allowed 32 ‘tokens’ to use during the season, which meant that Honda would be stuck with the engine which they submit on the homologation date: February 28.
The FIA made the change in the rules after a loophole was discovered by Ferrari’s James Allison, which meant that Honda would miss out on any improvements during their first season back in the sport which they left in 2008. Honda was publically annoyed by this loophole.
This could be a massive boost to the McLaren team, as this will in theory prevent their rivals from gaining performance through the season which they will miss out on. The team is one of two teams to boast a line-up of world champions, with the highly rated Fernando Alonso moving back to the team which he fell out with very publically in 2007. The team finished fifth last season.
