Athleticism: B-
Shows good initial quickness, especially as a center. Could be late moving at times as an offensive tackle and natural athleticism is not hindered as he has control of snapping the ball. Fluid mover, enough so to get out in space and block. A converted defensive tackle who has shown the athletic ability to play a number of positions in his collegiate career
Pass Blocking: B-
Strong base and anchors well. Shuffles and mirrors well in a short area, but can be stressed when protecting the outer reaches of the arc as an offensive tackle. Patient in his pass sets and does a good job of manning his gaps. Too often is unable to extend and lock out opposing linemen, allowing them to get the upper hand one-on-one. Can be collapsed up the middle when he plays too high negating his anchor strength.
Run Blocking: B-
Has good range and fluidity to get out on pulls and to work up to the second level. Capable of sustaining run blocks at the second level and is not easily juked by smaller linebackers. Able to turn defenders out of the hole and open lanes for runningbacks to slip through. Would improve with better technique, particularly in terms of pad level and hand placement.
Technique: D
Plays too high and can get thrown off balance too easily by lunging and getting ripped by the defenders hands. At a disadvantage in terms of height as a center as he is taller than most interior defensive linemen and naturally has a higher pad level. Bends at the waist. Hand placement and activity can get wild and was flagged for a fair amount of holding calls.
Intangibles: C-
Has some mental blunders, especially against the blitz, failing to recognize it in time or not seeing the rusher coming wide off the edge. Will drop his head on contact and lose recognition. Only five starts at center and a two-year starter on the offensive side of the ball. Effort is just adequate and doesn’t show the prototypical nastiness of a trench warrior.
Red Flags: Project
Bottom Line: Cameron Erving is an intriguing prospect in that he has played several positions adequately and shown potential at each of them, but offers no real definitive feel of a great player. Teams will still need to determine which position along the line they determine he fits best at, and be able to get him to learn to play with better technique. Erving has the athleticism fit into a zone blocking scheme, provided that he can be polished up, which is no given.
