Fantasy Profile: Francisco Cervelli, C, Pittsburgh Pirates

Pos. Rank NR, Captains Value NR

The Pittsburgh Pirates again dipped into the catcher well that gave them Russell Wilson and Chris Stewart when they acquired Francisco Cervelli from the New York Yankees for hard-throwing bullpen righty Justin Wilson. Known for his above-average framing abilities (a trait that the Pirates value greatly), Cervelli has not done much yet at the big league level due to a combination of freak injuries and a 2013 suspension in relation to the Biogenesis scandal. However, when given the chance, he has shown that he can be a serviceable hitter, evidenced by a career .278 batting average.

It is possible that Cervelli could put up something in the ball park of .260/10/60/60 if he was given the full-time job, but he will be splitting receiving duties with fellow former Yankee Chris Stewart, so temper expectations accordingly. Former first round pick Tony Sanchez could steal some at-bats as well. Cervelli is only worth a late-round flyer at this point.
