The New Year has welcomed some decisive action from the calm, collected Dutchman managing Southampton. Ronald Koeman had been eyeballing Eljero Elia for some time, and as the opening of the January Transfer Window chimed, pens were poised to scribble signatures excitedly onto important documents. Take note, everybody; for this could be another mammoth signing for Saints, who have gladly reaped the honest benefits of some well-calculated movements since the summer.
Saints are currently warming fourth place in the Premier League; after sitting (albeit shockingly) at second a few months previously, these chaps will probably have even a slight taste for the high life. The accolades derive from much tenacity, and Saints have boasted bucket loads since the season kicked off. Perhaps newbie, Elia, will be able to pepper Saints with the extra spice necessary to climb that inch further, once again.
The 27-year-old Dutch international, Elia, has been firmly on Koeman’s radar; the Saints boss knows Elia and family well, and feels the winger has not been granted access to his potential at Bundesliga side, Werder Bremen. Desires to play great football are at the forefront of Elia’s goals, if you’ll pardon the pun, but concerns have been raised regarding his off-pitch conduct. As far as Koeman goes, he clearly sees an opportunity for Elia to assimilate with the strength manifested at St. Mary’s, and this could enhance the already hyper-talented south coast side.
Elia has thus far only penned a loan with Saints, but rumour has it that his position could be filled more permanently if all parties are content with his performance come the end of the season. If Saints continue on their top four path of glory, making the transfer official could look that bit more appealing to the new winger.
With Jay Rodriquez’s persistent injury denying his chances to get out on to the field this season, Elia could be a superb fit within the team. Standing alongside Dušan Tadić and Graziano Pellè, the formidable pair they are, might be a tad daunting initially, but the duo have more than enough experience in the bank to show Elia the ropes, and integrate him seamlessly into the general pattern of play.
With Sadio Mané withdrawn from the picture in aid of the Africa Cup of Nations, Saints might come across somewhat lacking in extra flair and smashing goals, but the slightly tweaked dynamic could really work for the red and white stripes. Given that Elia’s position at Werder Bremen has been entirely unstable, a concrete place on St. Mary’s turf could also be vital for Elia’s progressing career, especially as he’s enjoying his late twenties.
Here’s to the start of a fruitful second half of the Premier League season.
