Fantasy Football Awards: Most Valuable Player

Every year there are a slew questions that we ask ourselves when the Fantasy Football season comes to a close. Who was the biggest bust? Who was the best draft bargain? Who was the best rookie? Who was the best waiver wire pickup? Who was the comeback player of the year? Who will be next year’s number one pick? And finally, who wins the Fantasy Football Most Valuable Player? So, we here at Last Word on Sports have created an award ceremony to declare the winner of each category. And without further ado, let’s GET IT ON!

It is in our nature to differentiate. Ever since we were tykes in pre-school we would always discriminate. If you were in Gym class and you were awarded the honors of being a team captain, you chose the best. No room for friends in an atmosphere like this. You need to win. Your noodle-armed friend would have to wait until after school to play Pokémon or Magic Cards or whatever it is you did, while you conducted business on the hardwood planks. Nothing wrong with the card games, I have a trapper keeper (yes, a trapper keeper) of cards that is filled with mythical creatures who were powered by the earth’s elements.

I digress.

Often in this game that we play, our teams look like Frankenstein’s monster; pieced together by waiver wire scraps and players that played good enough to stick around. But usually there is a constant; someone who played consistently well, and delivered time and time again. Those folks are our Most Valuable Players.

Fantasy Football’s Most Valuable Players

Honorable Mention

Aaron Rodgers perhaps has the stronghold on the actual MVP title, but we just can’t put two quarterbacks in this list (I think I gave it away). We made a decision and it was tough. I’m sure Rodgers will be just fine once he hoists the real life MVP award.

5) Rob Gronkowski, TE NE- If you read the Comeback Player of the Year article, you can see how much Gronkowski has played such an integral part of fantasy players championship hopes. He was far and away the best TE this year when the position was awfully brutal. He outscored his colleagues by over 30 points on the year and made other’s cringe after realizing that they had passed him up a few rounds over (ADP 41.9 per Yahoo stats).

4) DeMarco Murray, RB DAL- In standard games Murray failed to hit double digits only once. In his other weeks, he gave you chances to win every week by posting 15+ points in 11 weeks, and in six of those games he surpassed 20 points. If he didn’t win you those games, then I don’t know how you lost.

3) Antonio Brown, WR PIT- I wanted AB84 here because he is Mr. Consistency. He has five receptions for at least 50 yards in the past 32 games. He cannot be shut down. He is matchup proof. He is flat out the most reliable WR in fantasy and until someone can prove this otherwise, he will be the most valuable WR in both fantasy and reality. He can literally do it all.

2) Andrew Luck, QB IND- This award could have been Luck’s, but he threw it away with an astounding dud in the championship game. Many fantasy owners are cursing his name and wishing him nothing but the absolute worst. It is pretty unfair since he is probably the reason they were there in the first place. Before week 16’s stinker, Luck was averaging 24 points in standard scoring and had 10 games above the 20 point mark. Yeah, he sucked it up really bad in the championship game, but you can’t be perfect all the time.

1) Le’Veon Bell, RB PIT- Bell shocked the nation this year. He totaled 2,215 yards through land and air (1,361 rushing, 854 receiving) and cemented a spot for you in the championship games by his performance after the week 12 bye. It looks like this:

Week 13: 95 Rushing yards, 1 Rushing TD, 159 Rec. yards- 31.4 points
Week 14: 185 Rushing yards, 2 Rushing TD, 50 Rec. yards, 1 Rec TD- 41.5 points
Week 15: 47 Rushing yards, 2 Rushing TD, 72 Rec. yards- 23.4 Points

The final week wasn’t much to pine for, but it was enough to keep you in the contest. Better than the player mentioned above. His 83 receptions on the year made PPR draftees melt. I think the Bell has been rung and now we’re looking at a potential top pick in the next year.
