Tottenham vs Chelsea: An Eye Opener?

One of this season’s biggest upsets occurred in the Premier League on Thursday, as Tottenham beat league leaders Chelsea 5-3. When Chelsea were leading 1-0 after eighteen minutes, it is unlikely that many fans could’ve foreseen what would then unfold. Chelsea’s defence, one of the strongest in the league, was torn to pieces by a Harry Kane-inspired Tottenham.

Tottenham vs Chelsea: an eye opener?

Harry Kane, enjoying comfortably his most successful season to date, scored two goals; Rose, Townsend and Chadli were the other three scorers in one of Spurs’s most incredible results for years.

Do Chelsea really need to worry after this loss? Will  this loss matter to them in their title chase? Perhaps. The Blues, once leading the rest of the title challengers by eight points, have surrendered their lead and now find themselves equal on points with Manchester City. The title race has now become more competitive than ever, and ex-Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is one of the crucial figures in Manchester City’s title bid.

Gary Cahill has been poor in recent matches, and his form needs sorting out if Chelsea are to keep fighting for the title.

A Chelsea defence has not been torn apart so devastatingly in a long time, and although Cesc Fabregas provided a brilliant assist for Eden Hazard’s goal, he was off-colour when it came to set pieces, from which he has provided so many goals for Chelsea this season, meaning that Chelsea lost an area of creativity altogether. What’s more, a large number of missed passes meant that Chelsea couldn’t string their attacks together as they usually do.

Jose Mourinho hinted in a recent press conference that he will not be making any signings in January. However, after such a humiliating result, does he need to rethink this?
