Athleticism: A-

Extremely athletic considering his size. Fires off the line effortlessly and is very quick in his sets. Fastest moving man on the offensive line and has excellent range and movement ability. Lateral agility is just above average.

Pass Blocking: C

Despite his size and his athletic ability, Sambrailo has just average tools in pass protection. Has an above average anchor, but can be popped backward by some defensive linemen and needs to add more sand in his pants. Can get beat laterally a well when he can’t lock out, but shows quick hands and feet to latch and mirror. Could really improve if he takes to coaching and strength training.

Run Blocking: B+

While he does not drive defenders five yards off the line scrimmage, Sambrailo is an excellent zone blocker. Gets around quickly on pulls and moves downfield very well. Does an excellent job of steering defenders with his upper body and turning them out of the hole to open up running lanes. Could do a better job of sustaining, as he can fall of some blocks prematurely.

Technique: C

Hands are quick and strong, but does not have the long arms attached to them that so many great offensive linemen have. Runs his feet on contact, but will lunge and get overextended too often. Needs to play with better leverage, in order to maximize his natural size and strength.

Intangibles: A-

Four year starter who is very alert picking up blitzes and help blocking. However, will drop his head at times and leads to poor results when he does. Leaves it on the field, as he hustles to the play in the running game and blocks through the whistle and sometimes after it. Flashes a nasty demeanor, but is not a pure mauler. Involved in a fight in 2012 that resulted in him being stabbed.

Red Flags: Level of Competition

Bottom Line: Ty Sambrailo is a player who stands out on tape for his fantastic combination of size and athletic ability. While these traits are normally associated with the left tackle position, Sambrailo might be better off on the right side where his run blocking is more valued and his average pass blocking won’t be magnified. Overall, Sambrailo would be an excellent fit in a zone blocking scheme and could be a week one starter next season.

Comparison: Jack Mewhort

Grade: 8.8 (2nd Round)
