In a turbulent week for Jonjo Shelvey, where he was called “lazy” by his manager, things have gotten worse as he was charged by the FA for an elbow on Liverpool FC’s Emre Can during Monday’s match.
“Swansea City’s Jonjo Shelvey on Tuesday has been charged by the FA for violent conduct, following an incident in his side’s fixture with Liverpool,” said an FA statement.
“The incident, which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video, occurred during the fixture between the two sides at Anfield on Monday 29 December 2014. Shelvey has until 6pm on Wednesday 31 December 2014 to respond to the charge.”
Swansea City manager Gary Monk defended his player after the elbow, saying it was an unintentional swing of the arm by the midfielder to gain more momentum, but it seems the FA disagree with that asssesment and there is now a possible four-game suspension on the horizon for Shelvey.
The elbow went undetected and unpunished by referee Andre Marriner during the game.
Jonjo Shelvey later tweeted that the swing was unintentional, and he had apologized to the Liverpool midfielder Emre Can.
The Swans lost the match 4-1, and now face the task of replacing their starting midfielder with several important Premier League matches on the horizon.
