Athleticism: D+

Below average foot speed and overall athleticism, but his instincts allow him to play faster than he moves. Struggles to change direction and stiff in the hips. Has very good closing burst, however, and can close the distance between him and the ballcarrier in a hurry.

Run Defense: B-

Aggressive and impactful run defender. Mixes it up at the line of scrimmage and plays with power in his hands to disengage. Rarely lets the runningback get by him in the hole and can pursue to the sideline. Tends to avoid trash altogether and can take a very circuitous route the ball in pursuit.

Coverage: D-

Significant area of weakness. Is easily juked by wide receivers and struggles to hang with receivers out of their breaks. Concedes the catch and some yards in zone, but doesn’t get burned and provides enough cushion that he is able to close and make the tackle without getting burned. A very good opportunist when it comes to interceptions and shows good hands for the pick.

Tackling: B-

Powerful tackler and hits the body. A refreshingly sound tackler who wraps up and drives the ballcarrier to the ground. Can hit with pop and jar the ball out. Despite his poor athleticism, is a plus tackler in space and does not miss many tackles.

Intangibles: B+

Football character is much better than his personal character, as he has a DUI and misdemeanor battery on his record already. Nonetheless, is a two-time team captain and has strong instincts on the field. Moves very quickly off the snap and is constantly around the football. Can be fooled by misdirection only occasionally.

Red Flags: Minor Character Concerns, Size

Bottom Line: Though smaller and less athletic than the ideal linebacker, Ben Heeney is an impactful player versus the run and has a place in the NFL. Heeney will have to make his mark on special teams, but he should be able to contribute as a two-down linebacker and in run situations.

Comparison: Vince Williams

Grade: 7.6 (5th Round)
