Athleticism: C
Has plus deep speed for a corner of his stature, but will not win any foot races. Is fairly fluid and flexible for his size and shows nice burst to recover. A bit of a smaller player in a bigger player’s body.
Coverage: C+
Plays sticky and physical in short coverage, but efficacy wanes the further downfield he is asked to go. Is willing to get physical with receivers in their routes but is too all-or-nothing. Will get flagged for pass interference and then will allow far too much cushion to close on. Matches up well with larger receivers in man coverage, but can be out-quicked by smaller receivers.
Physicality: D+
Former safety who knows how to read and play versus the run. Very good at sniffing out runs and passes behind the line of scrimmage and coming to meet the ballcarrier. Is not the best at disengaging or tackling, however. Leaks yards after contact and is cornerback-only prospect. Reportedly has a history of shoulder problems which could limit his physicality.
Ball Skills: C+
Appears to have good hands for the interception. Nice body control and leaping ability to go up and snag the football. Production on the ball is just okay, and would like to see more playmaking ability from him.
Instincts: C-
Strong instincts in zone coverage and on plays in front of him, especially versus the run. Angles as a safety were subpar and is better playing just one side of the field. Only a one and a half year starter at corner since converting from safety and should develop with more reps.
Red Flags: Minor Durability Issues, Injury (Shoulder)
Bottom Line: While Jones has some development still to go before he can be considered an NFL starter, he has the tools for success. Jones’ medical report at the combine will also determine how high he will be drafted given his injured shoulder. If Jones can polish his instincts and play tighter coverage, he has the ability to start in a zone dominant scheme.
Comparison: Logan Ryan
Grade: 7.7 (4th Round)
