The Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, and Washington Nationals have agreed to terms on a three-team, 11-player trade. The main players involved in the trade are former Rookie of the Year, OF Wil Myers and SS Trea Turner, a 1st round pick by the Padres in the 2014 MLB Draft .
The deal is contingent upon Myers, who appeared in only 87 games last year with a wrist injury, passing his physical. Myers was named the 2013 AL ROY after batting .293 with a .831 OPS, and recording 98 Hits, 13 Home Runs, 53 Runs Runs Batted In all in only 88 games. Myers’ numbers tapered off this past season as he appeared in one less game yet recorded 26 less hits and 18 less RBIs. His average was around 70 points lower, and his OBP was 60 points lower, making Myers an enigmatic player. On one hand, he was traded for “Big Game” James Shields, but on the other hand, he has trouble staying on the field.
Trea Turner was drafted by the Padres in the first round of the 2014 MLB Draft. The 21-year-old shortstop hit .369/.406/.408 with 4 home runs and 14 steals in 46 games in low A-Ball this season. He was the 13th overall pick in the draft, and his combination of defense, speed and his bat make him a highly sought after commodity.
